Efika 5200B Project
Hardened Linux Embedded Server/Controller

in category Applications & Software
proposed by morfic on 2nd February 2006 (accepted on 11th February 2006)
Project Summary
Create a embedded server/controller running hardened linux for use in secure environments.
Targeting uclibc for hardened ppc on an efika while making sure a glibc install (working in alpha stages on a mac mini) can also be chosen should this requirement be put forth by consumers.
The embedded formfactor would allow retrofitting existing control panels.
What an embedded linux computer would allow over a simple programmable logic control is versatility, feature (virtually limitless expandability) set and freedom from proprietary software.
Eliminate the need for a computer to program the controller: the controller is the computer, the computer is the controller.

One possible feature could be using motion detection to request guard attention
and issuing automatic lockdown in a prison if no guard authorizes the passing through the monitored area within the allowed reaction time set.
Home aplications are baby monitor, inform parents when infants get out of their crib.
Monitor a yard for intruders. e-mail the home owners about the intrusion and attach an image of the intruder.
