KIWI uses syslinux & grub1, which are both hard coded in the spec files and sources. As a first step, these must be removed or rather just made conditional, then as a next step, add a few PowerPC specific things, like mkzimage. So basically the booting part must be changed, but that completely. As far as I can remember, it's written in Perl.
Is there an SVN or CVS online repo that can be browsed? I'm reading the PDF but not that detailed.. although its hosted on Berlios am I gonna be lucky and the files are there? :D

As far as I'm concerned there are only 2 ways you can write a system build tool - like Gentoo Catalyst where it builds from source or Debian/Ubuntu debootstrap where it fetches packages and builds a root filesystem. KIWI can't be too different.

Specs can be changed and mkzimage could be added as a post-build step. I just want a quick browse without installing a SuSE system (my Efika is, yet again, building..)

Just finished uploading an updated version of gutsy_inst, which incorporates the latest network installer. The kernel part remained the same.
Installing anything with 'tasksel' during installation does not seem to work, but 'apt-get install edubuntu-desktop' at least did not fail at start. It is still running, so I can't share desktop usage experiences...

Tested first with
Code:
apt-get install edubuntu-desktop
It kind of works, but some packages failed to configure during installation. On a second run they were fine, so most probably some packages were installed earlier than their dependencies.
Logging in was quite slow, and many little error messages were present. Also the theme had some troubles, it made my screen look broken. Running
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
a couple of times took away some error messages, but not all.

Now installing kubuntu-desktop, hoping that it will be less of a memory hog.

Tested now kubuntu-desktop using up to date gutsy on EFIKA. Results are kind of disappointing. Using the same base install and konqueror to view the same web page more than 50MB more swap is used than last week. The overall polish seems to be better, like the mouse cursor does not leave a trace behind, less error messages , etc., but the whole thing got a lot slower :-(

Did an upgrade, downloaded over 100MB of packages, mostly those, which I (and other launchpad users) thought to be problematic, waited 2+ hours for the upgrade to install, but there is no change in user experience :-(

Updated gutsy_inst to use the latest installer, but gutsy does not seem to be in an upgradeable / installable state. Both upgrading and installation fails at the moment, hopefully more luck tomorrow...

I just updated the Ubuntu Gutsy installer for EFIKA. Download locations are:

install: http://genesi.hu/ubuntu/gutsy_inst
boot: http://genesi.hu/ubuntu/gutsy_boot

This was my first successful Ubuntu testing installation for a long time, and an absolute first, when Xubuntu installation worked. It was a great disappointment, as instead of the familiar look of XFCE, it was arranged, as it was GNOME :-( None the less, it is still the fastest feature rich window manager for EFIKA.

While being a problem free install, it was awfully slow. Recently I compared openSUSE and Ubuntu development versions saying that openSUSE has more polish, better integrated, but a slow installation and package management, while Ubuntu is quick to install and manage packages. This advantage seems to be lost now...

And a side note: it installs now on Pegasos without any tricks, including Xorg.

Installing ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop also works now without any problems. But both are slow and start full with warning and error messages (just as on x86). So, if you have a choice, use xubuntu-desktop, as that is the fastest to install and run on EFIKA at the moment.

Now we're getting somewhere! :)

Right now Ubuntu Gutsy installs better than openSUSE factory. It has the same trouble as Gutsy in the past few weeks: broken dependency hell. There is just one huge difference: in openSUSE one can solve these problems by deselecting some packages or ignoring them. But it needs time, if there is a dependency problem, the solver is extremely slow. Once these are sorted out, it becomes really quick.

Summary: if anybody wants to do some software testing, or just see what is the latest and greatest, do it now using Ubuntu Gutsy!

I just uploaded a new gutsy_inst and gutsy_boot to the usual location. A few notes about the current situation:
  • - apt-get update && apt-get upgrade resulted in a broken system on two different snapshots of Gutsy, so a fresh install is recommended, for those who want to try it.

    - Only xubuntu-desktop installation seems to work, I could not install the rest of the desktops. This situation might change, as installation sources are upgraded.
So, right now it's worth to avoid an upgrade, if somebody has Gutsy installed and there isn't much software available for testing...

Now only dns-server can be installed, or kubuntu-desktop, none of the GNOME based desktops can be installed or upgraded (even xubuntu-desktop uses part of GNOME). I see more and more dependency problems on the GNOME front every day. I hope, this means active development ;-)

Just finished uploading an updated version of gutsy_inst and gutsy_boot to the usual location. My test install is still at "Installing the base system", but it never failed on me after this point. Which desktops work is another question :-)

OK, Xubuntu works fine. Kubuntu does not install due to dependency problems of openoffice, others are not yet tested.

Good night!
