Hi.

As some of you might have noticed in the FTF videos, we showed some pretty interesting stuff such as GLES/OpenVG, 720p/1080p video playback, different user interface, etc.

Now that FTF is over, we will gradually release these developments here on PowerDeveloper. We have to do this in a gradual way due to all the licensing issues involved.

As a start, here is a new image which can be installed on a SmartBook or a SmartTop:

http://www.powerdeveloper.org/asset/by-id/122

Extract and dd to a 2GB SD card. Make sure you also have the latest UBoot from here:

http://www.powerdeveloper.org/platforms/efikamx/linux

The image contains the Dock desktop as seen in the video. The dock itself builds on the latest Cairo/Pixman and is GL accelerated. Metacity has been replaced by XFWM. Both aim at getting the most speed out of the system, trying to get the best user experience.

What is still missing:
- our new Xorg driver with Xv
- gstreamer with 720p/1080p video decoding ability
- Flash
- ...

We hope to be able to bring these to your desktop as soon as possible!

Update: the sudo password is: efika

Johan.

Thanks, it looks quite nice on my smartbook :)

But now I'm confused. Is this meant just as a demo or is it possible to use it as a normal system?

After shutdown and restarting, it wants login data, which I did not provide initially and it reports i/o errors or read problems with the internal flash disk.

I guess I must re-install the "official" system anew. Which version is recommended now, please?

Well, I just went out and bought myself a 2GB SD card to try this.

It's a pre-configured image, where all the settings you would normally do when installing an OS already set up. It defaults to 720p on the Smarttop (which I actually happens to prefer, for various reasons). Everything just works! :-)

EDIT:
Image

I really like the Dock! Would be very happy if that would be standard in future "real" releases! :-)

Really looking forward to get that update as soon as possible! Keep them updates coming! :-)

And thanks for this image! :-)

It is obviously a demo image, but everything is there (as far as I can tell) and you can always change language, time zone, keyboard layout, etc (and even log in again) if you know the secret password! :-P

Tried the new image,

Flash is included and seems to work ok, how much more speed is there to come?

Not keen on the tacky dock, hope that's just for demo purposes. Natty with Unity is where the Efika needs to be heading. Will that be possible when the new Xorg driver arrives?

The Monster inc .avi which is included plays very well in the window, impressed with that bit.

Keep up the good work.

Hi.

The dock has some specific user advantages for a set of customers we're working with. Personally I don't like Unity. However, since it's all open source, you can basically run whatever you like.
Keep in mind that this image still uses Maverick at the base.

Also, while this image is meant as a demo, you could just as well use it day to day. That's what I do.

Johan.

It should not ask for any login data when restarting. The i/o errors also are not normal. Try re-flashing with either the official version here:

http://www.powerdeveloper.org/platforms/efikamx/linux

Or with the demo image again.

Johan.

Hi.

Something went wrong with the upload of the image; it has a corrupt installer archive. We will replace it with the correct one and announce here when that's done.

Apologies for any inconveniences.

Johan.

The image currently linked to should work fine. The corrupt one has been removed.

I don't see flash plugin on my prestine installation of this demo image. Any attempt to install flash fails from what seems a lack of flash binaries for this architecture. Furthermore, I've never had flash although others have mentioned having it working so please enlighten me as to how this is realized ?

Sven

Hi.

It was indeed an accidental inclusion of Flash in the image that was available at the beginning (before the corrupted version).
