thanks for testing Peter, i tried on my side too using your installer and kernel.
Actually you can install and use any desktop if you install the base system only then manually (apt-get) install the desktop packages (xubuntu, kubuntu, ubuntu...).

only xubuntu (XFCE) runs decently on the Efika though.

In this case tasksel uses a different resolver or tries to install a different set of packages.

Update: that was right. tasksel uses aptitude, which seems to have its own way of resolving package dependencies. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop works nicely.

then installation instructions are pretty easy :

install the base system, reboot, log in, apt-get install any desktop you like ;-)

Uploaded new gutsy_inst and gutsy_boot, but right now I can't recommend using it. I got some "missing XYZ package" messages during "Installing the base system". Maybe later today, or tomorrow :)

Update: passwd, login, sudo can't be installed due to missing dependencies. Installation failed...

I just finished a successful Xubuntu installation. Also to be noted, that the list of tasks in 'tasksel' grew considerably. One task to mention is 'Edubuntu KDE', which I will try install next.

It works nicely, even if sometimes a bit slowly on EFIKA. The bottle neck seems to be RAM, once enough of KDE is swapped out, the applications run smoothly.

It can be installed using
Code:
apt-get install edubuntu-desktop-kde
which in practice seems to install kubuntu with a large selection of educational software. It does not yet have (yet) the fancy theming of the GNOME version, but as KDE has a larger selection of educational applications, and these look nicer on a KDE desktop, it is definitely worth trying.

Yes, more in personal e-mail...

Just found on OS-NEWS: Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) is released [1]. I plan to prepare installers and boot kernels tomorrow for Pegasos and the EFIKA.
