 Post subject: Linux on Nintendo Wii
PostPosted: Tue Dec 26, 2006 2:16 pm
Hi !

I've just bought a Nintendo Wii console.
The wiimote system is really great !

It is PowerPc powered (IBM PPC "Broadway" @729MHz) and the graphic chip is an ATI ("Hollywood").

A Wii-Linux project is already opened : http://www.wii-linux.com/.

Maybe some of you are interested by that ?
I am :-)
I wonder that needs to be done to have a bootable kernel like for the PS3 Gentoo Linux release :-)

You might also be interested in this;

Since the Wii Remote is Bluetooth enabled, you can use it with pretty much any Bluetooth-enabled computer.

(you can also use it on Windows; http://onakasuita.org/wii/)

There is plenty of cool other stuff here;

However, let's refrain from just going on and on and shouting that a Linux kernel would be great for every PowerPC device you see on a website or in a store.

That's really great :P
I love this wiimote stuff.
That would be fun to use it with an EFIKA :-)

I'd move it in the generic cell section...

But the Wii doesn't use Cell.

I don't think there's much there to offer for Wii right now. They have their own web browser, it's good for playing games, why would you want to run Linux on it?

Sony are positioning the PS3 as a Supercomputer so running Linux is part of their grand scheme. Nintendo want to focus on games. I don't think there is any consideration to have designed the Wii as anything that will or has hooks available for easily running a desktop Linux.

And like I said, what's the point?

OK, Matt you're probably right, but the PS3 has no wiimote hardware and this is the real strenght of the Wii compared to the PS3 (which is better in performances or gfx).
I just wonder how this could be used with an EFIKA+Linux system (maybe with onakasuita.org link you provided above, it's for windows but the source is provided).

PS "what's the point" : I'm a bit out of every topic with this post. Sorry for that Matt (I'm very enthousiastic with my new toy), maybe it would be a good idea to move this to the "Power user" section ?

[Edit]I've followed the links and found WMD a "Linux Driver for the Nintendo Wii Remote". It seems it's working on SuSE Linux 10...
[Edit3] And it seems that some people made the wiimote work on the PS3 !
