Hi Mich,

Could you reboot the machine and plug it in again? If possible could you also turn off the wireless (right click on the networking icon, uncheck enable wireless), and remove the module (sudo rmmod rt2870sta) before plugging in the webcam? Do you still get the div0?

Uvcvideo is the same module used by the smartbook on it's built-in webcam, so it *should* work, although currently there is no XV overlay so the performance will not be very good.

I will try to disable the wifi before to plug the webcam, this after noon. But I've noticed one thing :

If I plug the webcam before to boot the smattop no such div/0 occurs anymore...

It is, to the best of our knowledge, some kind of USB bug somewhere in the stack (although, who the hell knows where?)

Maybe it's probe order, sunspots, some spacetime distortion, mysterious voodoo magic, or maybe all of the above come into play and cause it.

But, the one thing we can be sure of, if you never load wireless, it never div0's. We've been asking if anyone can look into it and clarify exactly where it happens, but with no stack trace and absolutely no sure way of reproducing it.. it's difficult. The one time I had JTAG hooked up to my Smartbook, for 3 days straight, the system was on wireless and didn't log even a SINGLE extra line in dmesg after boot. Infuriating.

Apr 14 22:07:30 seguin-desktop kernel: [ 62.187841] Division by zero in kernel.
Hi, I get the same backtrace about Division by zero on my EfikaMX that I just recently received (so the shipping kernel, 2.6.31.140.20-efikamx )

The difference for me is that it seems to bomb right after loading the sound drivers. Also, the frequency of Division messages is around 50 messages per second, so 10 times more frequent than your dump. Might also relate to the amount of kernel tasks going in the system.

I sporadically see tons of divide by zeros on my Efika MX as well. I patched my kernel (pulled from efikamx commit 3cb8249) with this commit so I'd get reasonable backtraces. Here's one:
Code:

I can't really make anything of it, but hopefully someone here can.

The wireless driver we are using is from staging, as such it's quality is... not the greatest we shall say to be nice. The rt2x00 from compat-wireless should work fine, I've been using it personally for a while now on my own machine without issues. We're considering using it instead of the rt2870sta, but we haven't got any definite plans.
