Post subject:  openSUSE on ARM

While not yet a full blown Linux distro, I got openSUSE running in a chroot on my iMX515 board today:

This time I was able to boot the system without a chroot. It is still just the base system, but with some tricks, it is also possible to boot it directly, without the need of the chroot.

The next step is to install a lot more packages, including YaST and most major desktops and applications.

After a break (the openSUSE BS was broken and unable to compile for ARM for a while), I'm downloading packages again :-)

Finally I got a little more than the base system running. It is still far from perfect and useful, but at least it is something booted without any locally modified packages, so a step into the right direction.

OK, finally there is a downloadable image for the BeagleBoard. It is available at http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/op ... 0ARM#Links (or my mirror without countdown and ads at http://roxen.integrity.hu/pub/opensuse/arm/ ). With a little work it also boots fine on the iMX515 devel board (v1.0).

I extracted the files from the image (kpartx & Co.), and copied to the microSD card. It came with an unknown root password, which I replaced with the one I had on my machine (vi /etc/shadow, empty password does not work). Also, there are many kernel module directories under /lib/modules, which can be safely deleted and one can add the directory coming originally with the board.

FYI to get X.org working you need to fix xorg.conf (actually add one, since it does not autodetect!) to make the video device fbdev for now.

openSUSE 11.2 is now being ported to ARM. The base compile system is finally ready (there were some troubles due to incompatible Build Service changes), just as the third of the rest of the packages. Right now I'm reviewing failed packages, as these block the building of many others. My first fix was just accepted, and suddenly the compile farm started to work on many new 11.2 ARM packages again :-)
