Yes, the upgrade worked fine, only 3rd party packages caused some trouble. Those can also be solved, but are kind of difficult if you don't know their dependencies by heart :-)

It took more than four hours to upgrade 1500+ packages, but it was completely problem free, everything works as expected. It's probably quicker, if you don't make a network installation, but I accidentally deleted my CDRWs and I prefer ftp sources anyway as they have a lot more packages :-)

A good number of Packman packages were updated while I was on holiday, so my little Pegasos worked hard for almost two days when I arrived back. New and updated packages are available at the usual place.

Talking about updates: as all of you could notice, package management in SUSE Linux 10.1 was far from perfect due to a new . Last week the situation improved a lot with an update to all related components, so if you have not done so, please update now. Use 'YOU' (Yast Online Update) instead of 'rug'. It has one little bug: if you don't have all installation sources available during update, all of your 'rug' services are lost (I ran into this one...).

There is one known bug: if you have local (non network) installation sources, 'rug' does not see, if they are updated. This is a problem, if you have an rsync mirror of packman pacages on a partition. Will be fixed after the next SLES RC is out :-)

Another large update is available for SUSE Linux 10.1. This makes package management a lot faster and removes some bugs. So it's worth to start up 'YOU' (YaST On-line Update). It must be restarted a couple of times to install all updates, you have to do it until no updates are installed.

Warning: there is a new kernel installed. Use 'mkzimage' to create a new bootable kernel for your machine. I never needed it, but it's still worth to make a backup of the old kernel :-)

Packman also has some new updates. For the first time ever, they created a 'sane' package, which compiles fine outside of the creators build environment :-) Without a scanner I could not test it, but AFAIK it supports a lot more scanners, as the original SUSE package.

Another big update went out yesterday. Not all packages were tested by me, so please let me know, if you have any problems.

PackMan got a new contributor, who uploaded lots of packages recently. It will take a while, before I can integrate these, as most of these packages (spec files) were created for a less strict build environment, then the one I use.

Yet another big update was published at ftp://spike.fa.gau.hu/pub/pmppc101/ It has now all the latest Packman packages for openSUSE 10.1

This time I could not test what I did, as I'm still looking for a new video card, and testing multimedia applications over VNC is not much fun :-(

Tomorrow I start to build Packman packages for openSUSE 10.2...
