I downloaded the Ubuntu image efika-armhf+3d-20110925.img.xz and wrote it to an SD Card which then allowed me to boot into Ubuntu.

Let me preface that I am unfamiliar with Ubuntu, my experience with Linux has been with version by Redhat, Gentoo, and, of course, Oracle.

I want to have a basic editor in the graphical interface for text files (nano in a shell works, but makes cutting and pasting cumbersome). So I try the install application feature and selected Emacs and also Gedit. What happens is that I get an error message: 404 not found when the packages are attempted to be downloaded.

My Ice Weasel browser works fine, I can download files therein.

What is not working for me is the Ubuntu package manager. I'll post a reply to this topic from within my Ubuntu session as to the error messages I receive. I'm thinking the problem may be the address of the server that is pre-installed, or there is a port issue (I do run a firewall on my network). It seems to me the package manager ought to work right out of the box, and if it doesn't something should be brought to the user's attention of what variables may prevent it from working, e.g. what ports need to be open or the user needs to select an address for a package repository.

I tried to ftp from a shell, but ftp is not in the default install. So, I'm in the chicken-or-the-egg scenario of troubleshooting this.

Here's my scenario:

I'm in File Browser. I select a text file. Right click to "Open with other application". Dialog appears with two panels: installed & available applications. I select the Available Application and select one (there are two with the same version '23' ??) Emacs. Click "Install" window disappears. After about a minute a window would pop up saying that connection to the server failed with a 404 error.

As I enter this, I tried again so I could capture the output and I did not get the failure window, so it appears maybe good things are happening and Emacs is being successfully installed.

I tried System-Administration-Synaptic Package Manager and was told a background process instance was already running. It would be be nice to have a message that told be where to go to monitor the progress. I'll keep my fingers crossed and update this thread with the results.

I monitored synaptic in the System Monitor and found it doing nothing, so I killed it. I then went through the same selection process and this time selected to install "gedit". After clicking "Install" the dialog closes and 30 seconds pops up a dialog warning of problems, I click through to get the error messages:

Could you run the following (as root)

apt-get update
After that, try installing a package again, with e.g,:

apt-get install gedit
Does this work?

By the way, efika-armhf+3d-20110925.img.xz is plain Debian, not Ubuntu.

You don't have to exit GNome. Try running it again. I think there might be a stale lock file, so you might just want to delete it.

There was a stale lock and I deleted it and the update proceeded. Thereafter, I was able to install Emacs using the package management system.
