Hi guys,

i fired up my EFIKA MX the first time.

First on a small LCD-TV (19") which didn't work... ok i have read that there is a problem regarding frequency or something in this direction..

No problemo! Daddy has another Screen with HDMI:
It is a Tube-TV but supports up to 1080i...

Well i powered the small black box and got the nice Genesi Logo... after some seconds Ubuntu's background appeared and some seconds later i where able to configure the system.

I choose my language, timezone, keyboard-layout... and changed name of computer and user....
Ubuntu finished the post-install processes and i assume the box tried to reboot,

Screen was black and after that nothing..... i waited and waited and waited ... nothing.

I thought "ok". Press the button a few seconds and reboot manually...

Than i get again the nice Genesi Logo and some seconds later a black screen...
the LED(Powerbutton) is green and i tested if the Computer realizes/ works if i move mouse, press buttons etc...

well it seems so(led shows that something is going on).

Long story short:
I assume that Linux choose a screenmode which my TV can't handle...

I tried to boot without keyboard and mouse to see if my keyboard makes trouble as i chosse german keyboard layout...

Somehow strange..

Any idea?

Hi.

The reason is the 'date bug'. We are fixing the issue (and several others) in an update to be released within the next couple of days. To fix the problem, you can re-image the system by creating an SD card:

http://www.powerdeveloper.org/platforms/efikamx/linux

You could go with the official image, or, use the demo image linked to here:

http://www.powerdeveloper.org/forums/vi ... sc&start=0

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Johan.

Unfortunately, you might have to reinstall your operating system. Please visit http://www.powerdeveloper.org/platforms/efikamx/linux and download the ~600 MB image file. You will need to copy the image to a 2GB (or bigger) SD card. You will find information about the process and the required software tools here: http://www.powerdeveloper.org/asset/by-id/97

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks, ok that means i need to buy a bigger sd-card first.
That is what i call murphy's law : D

EDIT:
I assume the system can boot from USB too?
If yes i can use a stick.

Neither the Smarttop (nor the Smartbook) can boot from USB. See here.

This would require quite a great deal of work from Genesi (or Freescale), as far as I can tell. That is, implementing a part of the USB standard that runs before the operating system (Linux). It sounds quite laborious to me.

Was this issue ever fixed? I installed the latest Maverick release (2011-09-22), and after a reboot, I no longer get an HDMI display. I can use the root console over serial just fine, but nothing on HDMI.

If you can get the serial console, can you please provide a copy of the dmesg output?

Which monitor is this? Seems odd that it's attempting to init hdmi so much.

Samsung syncmaster T240HD.

I had problems with HDMI with earlier releases of the efika kernel, but those were eventually fixed. Now they seem to have returned. It worked for the install, but after reboot, nothing.

Exactly the same problem with new smarttop just received last week courtesy Bill and Raquel--I thought I did not have a monitor with HDMI ( it did not work at all on initial attempt to connect to 54 inch big screen Samsung LCD HD TV at home, with message "resolution incompatible" or some such from TV) , so I waited until i received a HDMI-->DVI cable that I had ordered, hooked up to Samsung E2340 23 inch monitor, got the initial system configuration menu and everything went fine (although it did seem to take quite a few minutes!) until the very end where it said "post-installation python support" or some such, and then I get this black screen.
Tried to reboot, this time black screen after initial genesi logo in about 10 seconds. Tried a direct HDMI cable (it turns out E2340 has HDMI), ditto.
Tried a generic 19 inch flat screen monitor, same thing. Since I am a newbie as far as Efika is concerned, please let me know if I have to upgrade system software/firmware. Thanks. Prof Rama Viswanathan, Beloit College, October 12, 2011

To everyone with a black screen after booting,

Could you try the following: boot as usual and when the system has gone through booting (see e.g., led activity), unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in.

Do you get any output to the screen?

We know the reason for the trouble is the power management for the HDMI chip. We will most likely remove power management from the HDMI chip completely to resolve these issues.

Johan.

Hi Johan: I tried your suggestion, but it does not work. Also, when you say "boot as usual,"how long is it supposed to take? My system stopped flashing orange/yellow and came to a steady green in about ten seconds flat!
