I get the following error while booting

[ 1.697023 Kennel panic ] - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block (8,2)

It does not move beyond this and the hard disk light olso does not blink. I believe the file system may be corrupted.

I just powered it on the smartbook. The GUI appeared and i configured date and time and made a user. Then I configured the top panel to appear in the bottom instead (where i like it in ubuntu) and the computer stopped responding to any input. I powered the computer down by pressing the power button. After that whenever I try to power on the machine the above mentioned error appeares. How should I fix this.

Could you try re-imaging the system, it sounds like the installation got corrupted when it locked up.
