Ugly bug: the installer tries to automagically resize partitions, if there is not enough space. But resizing partitions does not work, so installation stops.

Good news: there is full Amiga partition table support, no more need to use DOS partition table or mess around with 'parted' manually to create the necessary partitions.

I installed 'factory' today, the latest version of openSUSE. Here are some of my experiences:

- the YaST partitioner works now correctly on Amiga partition tables, so there is no need to use DOS partition tables or use command line tools in most cases. See exception below :-)

- insatllation of CD/DVD version works fine with 256MB of RAM, but installing factory or the ftp version needs a working and enabled swap partition. That means, one needs to start a shell (with the start_shell boot parameter), if it does not exist, create a swap partition from the command line, and finally enable swap using 'swapon /dev/hdXY'.

- Xorg does not work due to still unresolved PCI domain issues. As an ugly workaround, cd to /etc/X11 and copy xorg.conf.install over xorg.conf which gives you a slow but working X using the FB. It's worth to try it, as both KDE and GNOME received interesting usability enhancements!

- Marvell gigabit does not work. It was all right in 10.1, but not in a politically correct way. A workaround is now being developed.

- 10.2 will feature yaboot as boot manager, but it's currently broken.

It will be very interesting to see where this goes with the latest Novell-Microsoft marketing...

Prediction: NOVL is bought by MFST.

Well of course. Microsoft never had any good directory
service. eDirectory currently is unbeatable. Active
Directory is lightyears behind..

Microsoft tends to purchase entire companies when they
want some technology. They will do it this time as well.

Microsoft couldn't care less about Linux. It's all about
directory services. That's what I think at least.

Beta2 is here. Some development highlights:

- Xorg is still broken in this beta, but there is already a fix (or rather a hack) for it, which will be included in later this week in factory. See workaround above.

- The Marvell Gigabit Ethernet is now correctly detected and used during installation, but the module is not loaded after reboot. As a workaround please add the module name (mv643xx_eth)to "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT" in /etc/sysconfig/kernel

Factory was updated yesterday / today so I tested it again, as usual. Good news: both major Pegasos related bugs I mentioned here are fixed now.

If you have some time, please check out openSUSE factory, as we are getting close to a release candidate, so there is not much time left for hunting down bugs, and as we say in Hungarian: more eyes can see more.

This is not a pitch to bring SUSE to Ubuntu developers or bring Ubuntu to SUSE developers. This is more of watching the progress of two dynamic Linux communities as they progress on our platforms.
