I made a gentoo liveimage system for the efika
ready to boot from usb-stick or hd (& probably also
usb-cdrom).
gunne is once more so kind to upload a torrent on pegasos.org
(i'll send it to him via snailmail, so just some more days)
radeon-tvout & (non-tested) xgi dri,fb,xorg drivers are included

What about if I don't want something that plays media or does graphics?

I am still struggling to get my Efika (assume I have no Pegasos or other device to leverage in this) to install a Linux without chopping and changing 3 or 4 different kernels, installers, utilities and boot keys.

How about something that guarantees me the ability to boot on the serial console with no graphics, partition my disk, install Debian, Gentoo, whatever else so I can run a server?

you can partition your hd with it & it's not too
hard to install a gentoo from it.
as i'm not the only linux-guy I'm sure someone else is interested in doing a non-xorg-system

I've RTFMed but do you know how can i boot it from a TFTP server ? none of my USB sticks work on the Efika so i tried to boot it from my TFTP server, but of course it complains about not being able to find the root partition. Any idea about it ?

Hi!

1st of all you must know that it is not possible to boot
e17ka with a simple "boot e17ka".
Instead the included "BootE17" menu should be edited
and used for booting.
As the liveimage uses the standard gentoo-livecd-scripts
it is necessary to define the cdroot parameter
(if there's an internal hd in your
efika the 1st entry in the menu is valid for the 1st usbstick
found - cdroot=sdb1).
I doubt that it is possible to boot a gentoo-livesystem
via tftp-server, as there's no ftp-device you could define for
"cdroot", but i may be wrong here.

I am downloading the torrent to play with...

Does the build support NFS? If so, you should be able to boot the kernel image via tftp and set the root to an nfs share, no? I am not an expert, but I will experiment with this.

There is a page on the Gentoo Wiki at http://gentoo-wiki.com/Efika that has instructions regarding netboot of a Gentoo build via tftp/nfs. Mabye that will help me figure out how to do it.

Hi frostwork, when booted from USB stick or USB CDROM, won't it be too slow (as it is 1.1) ?

really no idea with nfs
boot from usb1.1 ist quiet fast - only thing which needs
long is extracvting the kernel at the beginning - the boot itself is quiet fast

First of all i want to thank frostwork for making this possibele! Nice.

In my case the BootE17 also needed a rewrite for e17ka to hd0:0 E17KA in the 1st boot option.

Playing an mp3 sounded strange at first but after using alsamixer to turn down gain a bit and turning of line-in and mic playing mp3 goes well.

Playback of mpg movies is not working (way to slow)

A little wishlist for the next version:
- a gui for the alsa mixer
- a gui for configuring network settings so it is a capable of browsing the inet out of the box or at least after changing network settings.
- a installer to install gentoo to the harddisk from the liveimage (like beos)
