Hi guys

I just put my Radeon 9100 (aka 8500 pro) in my Peg2 with ubuntu to replace the lame Radeon 7500 :P

I was all excited, however, I can only get 640x480 screenmode using the same xorg config I had for my Radeon 7500 getting 1280x1024, can anyone help?

I don't use Ubuntu, but if it's anything like the problems I've seen with the xorg radeon driver you'll need:

Option "DDCMode" "on"

In your card configuration (Section "Device" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf). At least, that fixed the problem when I was using a Radeon X700 PCI-E.

Hi magnetic,

I have not tried to change card like that. Maybe the hint from nine above will help. A good help can also be to view /var/log/Xorg.0.log Then You can see what fails.

gentlemen

I ended up uncommenting out the Horiz and Vert sync that I needed to comment out for the 1280x1024 mode for the Radeon 7500 - then I had to put the actual frequencies of my NEC 1810x LCD monitor and it worked, but only @ 75 hz and the optimal is 60hz. Thanks for your help guys.

ps I see that xorg seems better than xfree but when the heck are they going to make the displays and card work OTOTB?

Most likely not very soon ?

When changing graphicscard as You did, it should probably work to reconfigure X with the new graphicsboard using:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

or perhaps

gksu dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I haven't tried myself, so not absolutely sure, will try with some different cards when having little time for it. I dont think it would change anything for You though, as the cards You mentioned should use the same driver, but maybe. There is two drivers for ATI cards, r128 and radeon.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log will tell you what the server is trying to load.

lspci

will show You the card thats detected in your system.

You could perhaps also boot the Live CD with the new graphicscard too see how the autodetection works.

The autodetect function will try to autodetect during the installation, and in most cases it should work. But for the Pegasos II for instance you need to force the AGP card into PCI mode by adding that option.

More info about options and other things is to find here: LINK

Some tools and other info here also: Xorg-Edit - Sax2-X11 - Wiki - Ubuntu

Hope You got some hints.

Not very soon. ATI no longer seem to want to allow access to their chipset documentation and as a result the drivers are becoming guesswork from previous chipset revisions. Even 2D is lagging behind other implementations in terms of acceleration.

Unless that guesswork gains some additional help, it will become harder and harder to produce "complete" drivers.

On the x86_32 and x86_64 side of things, the fglrx drivers are (as I've said elsewhere) chronically unreliable.
