I just received my Smartbook today. So far, it looks to be a decent machine for good value.

However, I've encountered two issues in my initial use. First, like another recent poster, when I first booted the machine, it did not ask me to create a user or log in. Instead, it went all the way to the desktop and the user is Efika. I created another user, but there seems to be no icon or menu option to switch users or log out (the shut down icon at the bottom the screen does not offer either option). Even after creating a new user with full administrator privileges, shutting down and rebooting does not change the start up behavior -- the process continues until fully booted at the desktop, and I'm automatically logged in as Efika. How can I make it so that I am given a choice to log in as a particular user?

The second issue I encountered is that it does not seem possible to drag with the trackpad and trackpad "buttons". Is there a way to drag objects, such as windows?

The image you received is called the dock image. Unfortunately, I'm not personally familiar with it, PurpleAlien (Johan) will be best to answer how to go about adding another user. I'll point him to this thread when I'm done posting. As to logging out and back in, that *should* work from the power button in the dock. Alternatively, I believe the dock (it's called cairo dock) has another log out/log in button.

As to the dragging things around, you can "double tap" on the trackpad to grab and move things (you tap once and then tap again this time keeping your finger on the trackpad), or alternatively, if it's a window you're trying to move, you can hold down the alt button while using the left button.

It seems during our recent server move that some of the images have gotten corrupted, so we're working on restoring them. The other option is to download an image, and write it to an sdcard and install it (maverick is the one most people use) and this will allow you to go through the initial setup of your own user, but you will not get the "dock" interface, it will be a standard gnome interface.

What you have to do is go to Settings->Administration and select LoginScreen from the menu. Unlock the window that pops up and select "Show the screen for choosing who will log in".

After rebooting, you'll be greeted by GDM and you can select your other user. Keep in mind that this new user will not have the dock, but instead, will have the default GNome desktop.

Yes, I was confused by the Cairo Dock. The key for me was to make the panel/menu visible and then switch users (as well as follow your instructions, Johan).

So everything works as I was expecting it to now, based on my prior experience with Ubuntu.

One more question: how do I get the trackpad "buttons" (the - symbols) to work as mouse buttons (for instance, by pulling up menu options)? Or does this work on the Smartbook?

As I continue to play with Smartbook, it really does approximate (as much as can be expected) working on my Ubuntu desktop. Thank you for a nice product!

there are physical switches under those marks. just press down a little harder on the one on the right for right click. the other one just does left click.
