Have just bought Efica MX and am a complete newcomer to this piece of kit and Linux. The MX is running on the standard OS of Lots of fun ahead....

I was hoping to be able use the MX from remote locations but it will be based in a place where there are power outages and so it needs to be able to get going again without someone pressing the on button.

I was looking for a wake up on lan feature - from what I can tell the MX does not have a BIOS so is there away that it can be made to start? My router is using DDWRT so no problem sending timed WOL signals.

I have scoured the net and these blogs but not come up with a comparable Q&A.

Any thoughts/advice most gratefully appreciated.

Hi.

The Efika does not support Wake on Lan. The only thing we can do here is tell you how to apply a hardware hack which will automatically start the system after e.g., a power loss.
This hardware hack will however void your warranty and requires some soldering.

Thanks Johan,

Pity that WOL is not an option.

I had thought of your hack but didn't like the idea. Nevertheless I would appreciate the info so please advise. I realise that this would invalidate the warranty if I decide to do it.

However, I have a 12v/6Ah battery that I stripped out of an old home security alarm system. I thought that this might be a solution as this would keep the MX going for about 12 hours, it should provide a decent UPS solution. Just need to find a small battery charger. Does this make sense?

Many thanks

Alistair

Hi.

Send me an email (jdmm (at) genesi-usa) and I can provide you the info for the hardware hack. I'd rather not publish it on the site here, since it's not officially supported.

As for the battery, that should work but I've not personally tested that yet.
