Looks interesting. Do you have any more details? What chip is used for SATA & Ethernet, what firmware is used, how much RAM is supported, etc.

the FPGA looks interesting, what is it ?,and is it usable by customers for installing such things as codec encoding/decoding assistance, HW security, wireless Mesh/encryption IP etc ?

its a shame you didnt include high def pictures as they are to small to see the full detail and chip No.s etc, i cant even see the power, is it using a generic direct external DC supply /wall wart, and what is its current watts under a full work load at the moment(when idle, watts isnt needed as a benchmark as you want it working for you or whats the point)?

Well, sometimes that is the point. Do you really need to know the exact chip numbers?

Please let's focus on functionality and not part numbers.

While, as a server guy, I'd be really interested in the SATA and Ethernet chip, I must admit, that looking at the pictures, all the important parts are there. The MPC8610 chip provides CPU, video and sound, and I have some first hand experiences, that these are great. There is / are chip(s) for SATA/Ethernet/USB on the board, so practically everything is there to make a small and silent but really fast machine. And if you really miss something, there is a free PCI-E slot at your command.

Hi all, I want to share with you about a MPC8610 board from Japan, named "Redtail" (name of the hardware engineer of the board)
This is smaller 3.5 inch size all-in-one board but still under development.
Please post your comment about this board.
it seems to be a nice board.. but what's intended for?

Thank you for providing me your comments.
Let me answer the questions I got here as followings

1. SATA/PATA chip = JMicron JMB363 because of AHCI compliant
2. GbE = Realtek RTL8110S because of supported by UBoot / Linux
3. USB host = NEC D720101 because of supported by UBoot / Linux & the best USB host chip
3. Firmware = UBoot because we are familiar with this
4. RAM capacity = up to 2GB
5. Univarsal local bus module = We made NOR and NAND Flash module for the board. Customer can design and attatch its own module with the board such as FPGA with NOR Flash module as shown.
6. This board was designed for Industrial / embedded market
7. The CPU cooller on the board is for a 30W of the Core2Duo so we could use much smaller CPU cooller or a fan-less heat-sink for the board. Freescale will post a data sheet of MPC8610 shortly then we can check out the final spec of the power consumption of the MPC8610

Thank you for the details! These parts make a nice little board, not only for industrial market, but also for general use.
I just finished compiling KDE 4.1.2 on my Freescale MPC8610 eval system (see http://www.powerdeveloper.org/forums/vi ... 1487#11487 ), and it runs perfectly on the 8610.
My system has the same CPU, sound and graphics (Freescale DIU), and KDE 4.1.2, which is told to be a resource hog, runs smoothly on it, providing a perfect desktop experience.

and it's possible to use parthenope (ub2lb) as second level bootloader

It is good to see that the board information is now public and associated with such a high profile company:

http://www.necst.co.jp/product/emb/serv ... ent_6.html

The board will not be sold directly, but used as a reference design to develop new products. We would certainly like to be working with them on such an effort.

R&B :)

Interested geeks may note that the Redtail board is smaller than the Intel Atom one on that page, and if you checked the power consumption of the Intel companion northbridge, the Redtail is lower overall :)

What are we waiting for? Since there already is a board, let's cooperate with them and get it mass produced. It sure would sell like hot cakes and not only to geeks! It's a GREAT value for money, at that performance/power level!

I've seen the 8610's performance, at this form factor it's going to be a really powerful machine!
