Post subject:  FC4 (and CDs) available (2005-09-27)

I've just put an updated install tree for FC4, including ISO images this time, at ftp://zeniv.uk.linux.org/pub/people/dwmw2/fc4-pegasos/.

This has a single CD image for booting on 32-bit and 64-bit Mac and CHRP hardware, which also works on the Pegasos. See the README.Pegasos file for instructions.

[ This is an updated version since the original post on 2005-09-22, and should work on the older firmware, fixing the bugs discussed below where the netboot.img crashes after unzipping the kernel. If you've already downloaded the 2005-09-22 release (which is still available), it should work with the combined kernel+initrd image from http://david.woodhou.se/ppc32-claim.img, or the ext2-formatted CD image from http://david.woodhou.se/pegasos-boot-20050922.ext2 (for this, follow the older installation instructions. ]

Download links for current (2005-09-27) version:

If you're having problems with it, try booting the vmlinuz and initrd from the ppc/ppc32/ directory using yaboot. Putting them onto an ext2 format CD is one way to achieve this, if you don't already have yaboot installed.

Oh, I suspect I know the problem. I forgot to work around a bug in the older firmware, because I've already upgraded mine. Try the image at http://david.woodhou.se/ppc32-claim.img

341fde894671bbedb4c49d4beac4dea0 ppc32-claim.img

If I'm right, copying the contents of the boot.iso onto an ext2-format CD and booting with yaboot will also work -- yaboot has the necessary workaround.

I tried now ppc32.img and ppc32-claim.img but both will freeze after gunzipping.

My Firmware is 1.2 from 20050602

I guess I should boot also only with this file for netboot?

Bah. OK, try http://david.woodhou.se/boot.ext2 then. Burn it to a CD and then:

boot cd /ppc/chrp/yaboot conf=cd:,/ppc/ppc32/yaboot.conf

You should be able to netboot using that version of yaboot too, if you put together an appropriate yaboot.conf

Well, still no luck. At least he tries something to boot from CD but it seem FC/Yaboot doesn't like Amiga Partition Table or he needs MBR as I get the Message: Amiga Parition Table Corrupt.

I think that's normal. What happens after that?

Post subject:  Re: New FC4 install tree (and CDs) available

I got the boot: prompt.

Post subject:  Re: New FC4 install tree (and CDs) available

OK, that's fine then. Enter 'linux resolution=1024x768' at the boot: prompt. Or maybe just hit enter -- it could be that the default 800x600 works for you, although ISTR it didn't for me.

I've updated the instructions at the start of the thread to refer to the boot.ext2, which I've given a slightly more long-term filename. If I can persuade the PSU fan on my Pegasos to start turning again and downgrade it to the older firmware, I'll try to work out why my second 'netboot' image didn't work.

Post subject:  Re: New FC4 install tree (and CDs) available

OK, I've also fixed the 'netboot' image at http://david.woodhou.se/ppc32-claim.img.

I'm uploading a new install tree to ftp://zeniv.uk.linux.org/pub/people/dwm ... s-20050927

You should be able to rsync from that, instead of downloading it all again.

Once it's finished uploading and I've actually tested an installation (on the old firmware) from the resulting CD images, I'll change the symlink from ftp://zeniv.uk.linux.org/pub/people/dwmw2/fc4-pegasos to point to that version, and change the announcement at the start of this thread.

Post subject:  Re: New FC4 install tree (and CDs) available

Ok, I did now boot with

boot cd /ppc/mac/yaboot

and then with

linux32

Yaboot starts. I wanted to install through FTP but it doesnt recognize the build-in ethernet ports.

Post subject:  Re: New FC4 install tree (and CDs) available

It ought to recognise the ports. Most of my test installs have been over NFS.
You'll probably find eth0 is the via-rhine, and eth1 is the GigE port.

Author:  dwmw2 [ Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:19 am ]
Post subject:  Re: New FC4 install tree (and CDs) available

I lie. During the installation only the via-rhine is available. It looks like the Marvell GigE driver isn't in the install image.

Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.redhat.com/ and we'll get that fixed for Fedora Core 5.
