Just installed Ubuntu Feisty on my Pegasos II, with Peter Czanik's kernel (2.6.20-15-powerpc). It is working fine except one thing: it seems, that the asfs file system is broken. Every stuff gets a fatal exception when I try to open a file from an ASFS partition.

Is there any solution for this? Is it a known problem of this kernel, or only this kernel build is broken?

I did not modify that kernel at all. All I did was combining the original vmlinux and initrd files into one Pegasos bootable file.

As for the ASFS problem: I have no idea, as I don't have MorphOS installed, and could not find a related bugreport in Ubuntu's bug tracker (launchpad.net). But as I did not modify the kernel, it's the problem of the original Ubuntu kernel.

ASFS support is practically unmaintained, I'm surprised it's even in the Ubuntu kernel still. There were some VFS changes which were fixed, but compiling fine isn't the same as working fine.

What it needs, I think, is fixing from scratch and submitted to mainline via the Linux filesystem guys.

Here, from my Feisty Linux, I can regularly mount (a)sfs partitions I formatted from MorphOS and (just) read files from those mounted devices...

From shell:
as first you'll need to create a mount point directory with command mkdir. In the following example I type:
mkdir /mnt/mountdir/
then
sudo mount -t asfs /dev/hdxy /mnt/mountdir/

That's all!

Bye,
