I like the Sharp, however at 5" and source code missing (apparently the people who are working on it in the open source world are basing off our kernel); I'd hardly call it a competitor. I wouldn't mind owning one, however last I knew they weren't available outside of Japan. Perhaps that has changed recently, and if so, point me to the site so I can buy one!
i agree, it's not a former competitor but it only shares the same platform.
In Europe you'll find it here: www. pulster. de

The lack of usable video acceleration is one of the Smartbook's few sore spots, considering what the hardware is capable of.
Isn't software always further behind schedule? :(

A bit late, but video acceleration is there, and works great on my EFIKA smartbook!

Post subject:  Ecafe smartbook

I just got one from France at a 205 euros price tag. I needed a video out port and a lightweigth, high autonomy smartbook.

So i bought the ecafe ex hd

It's a nice hardware, sturdy, and the keyboard is not so bad to type on (even if i mostly use my external one, a Happy hacking Keyboard), the videos play smoothly, sound is ok (the closer hdtv episodes are fine on it) and i have a 12-15 hours while just typing on and using it for Powerpoint style presentation (latex beamer and i didn't tried impressive right now ;-)) via a hdmi-> vga converter.
The screen is not matte and the view angles are not so good but it is not as bad as it was said.

The software though is not so good, as they use an old version of ubuntu with easypeasy which is slow.
There is no support via email or forum, lots of qa but few direct answers in the forums.
And it seems hard to install other things than the ecafé image disk...

So it's a nice hardware, targeted at people with low needs in multimedia and tech support but i won't sell it right now on ebay as i really like it.
